Rise Against – Chamber the Cartridge

Rise Against is my favorite band ever, if you didn’t already know. I like to analyze things especially things that have hidden meanings. When I first listened to this song, I really didn’t know what its intention was. I was captivated by the fist pumping beat. Tim (the lead singer and writer) is questioning whether the Earth can be repaired (saved) or whether or not we have already done too much damage. In a sentence, it’s about the state of the world, our self-destructive tendencies, and our complete lack of willingness to make a change. Pretty powerful stuff in my opinion.

Alternative energy sources may be expensive, but they do not pollute the air.

Alternative energy sources may be expensive, but they do not pollute the air.

“What’s mine was always yours, and yours is mine” — This is referring to the idea that we all share one Earth. We live on one plant and we are all together. So, if I damage one part of it, it effects everyone else. An example I can think of is: Nascar races. It takes many people to quickly tune up the car during a pit stop.  If one person damages something to one of the parts, the car can crash and everyone will feel the effects.

“Blind to this impending fate
We’ll let the world carry our weight
Its back breaks with every mile
But we all live in denial”

Many people refuse to see what we are doing to our planet.  In my opinion, it’s almost like a defense mechanism. If you ignore it, then you wouldn’t feel guilty or upset because, well you don’t know the truth. The famous documentary An Inconvenient Truth comes to mind here.  After listening to these words, I wonder how much longer can the Earth “carry our weight?” How much longer until the “Earth’s back breaks” I think everything has breaking points, even our planet.

“Is it too late to reverse what we’ve become?” — We need to start to invent new clean technology that can start to reverse the effects of air pollution. In the past, we were somewhat skeptical and we were questioning whether or not this new technology is amazing. Are the advantages better than the disadvantages?  It’s clear that the answer is yes. Despite the air pollution and constant global changes, we decided that the advantages outweighed the harmful effects.  I just hope something can be done….soon. Next, why do people drive hummers? Does it show status? Nowadays, dumb people are driving smart cars. We need smart people driving fuel efficient cars!

We are not alone.

His words: “In alleys void of any light where nameless things live out of sight”
“Save us from what we have become tonight”
“Eyes glazed with distrust, no sense of wrong or right”
– It’s a little bit unclear who he is talking about, but I think it’s vague on purpose.  Tim is a follower of peta2, so I think I’m right when I say Tim is questioning everything. Whether or not everything can be saved, animals included. We are not alone, animals have been around much longer than humans and have done nothing wrong to harm the planet, however they are experiencing our harmful decisions and dirty technology. It is up to us to save them and ourselves along with our only adequate planet.

“And so we carry on each day as if our lives are not so grey” greysociety– I think Tim is  talking about how our society has lured us into being almost like one another. An image that comes to mind is a sidewalk in New York City. People are finding it harder to an individual in this modern society, where it’s sometimes scored, or looked down upon someone whey they do try to stand out. We need more people to be individual and share their ideas throughout the world.  The people who stand out are usually those who were lucky in the gene pool, or those who act like idiots or “jackasses”.  It’s almost as if our society is reversing itself. People need to start “Rise Against” society and stand up for the world. This song talks about how there are definite problems within our environment, but nevertheless there are even more problems within our society.

“A lesson to learn at a crucial point in time” — This should be quite obvious. We need to decide whether or not we will commit ourselves to alternative energy sources, despite the problems that come up within the first years. We need look into the distance future and then commit ourselves to solve those problem by solving problems right now. Lastly, we need to understand that what’s here now, should be around long enough for our children and children’s children. Remember: “What’s mine was always yours, and yours is mine.”

I’m looking forward to reading your comments and feedback. ^.^

All We Are is Entertainment

// November 2nd, 2009 // 11 Comments » // Life, Music

Some of you may know that Rise Against is one of my favorite bands, ever. Their lyrics, if you understand them, are truly amazing. This song “Entertainment” is epic, it talks about our modern society how we are like puppets and how outside forces control our thoughts, our decisions, our actions. I like to be open minded and question things so I (hopefully) don’t fall in these societal traps. Here is a lyric I really like:

“All we are is entertainment caught up in our own derangements. Tell us what to say and what to do.”

Almost everyone has somebody they look up to. Everybody looks up to an actress, actor, singer, dancer, musician, etc. Pretty much anybody in the entertainment industry has hardcore, loyal fans who look up. Some of these loyal fans go to extreme lengths such as changing their hairstyle or their clothes or their view on life. I know a crazy girl who reads those insane fashion/girl magazines. The magazine is like a leash that is strapped tightly around the reader. Here’s another lyric from that song: “”All we are are pretty faces, picture perfect, bottled rage. Packaged synthesized versions of you!”  The “we” they are referring to is to the magazines covers, etc. These magazines are fake versions of real people. These fake magazine covers are distortions of realilty with an impossible chance for the average person reaching the end product.

This quote ties in with this video. In the entertainment industry this is called a “retouch.” Lol, more like a re-do! I don’t think not one part of her face is legit her own. I wonder how it feels like for a model to see her body plastered up on a billboard knowing that someone transformed and enchanced it. Is it like seeing an identical twin who is better than you in every way? Or is it a self-esteem boost which makes you think you really look flawless?

“They all scream California and its toppling empire, but can’t you see the end is coming soon?”

We all scream for California, in the sense that we all want to be what California is. We all want to be like the people we see on TV, we all want to become them. We idol them we look up to them, and when he says “And its toppling empire” I believe that pretty much speaks for itself. Cali has become an empire of its own and its toppling over us… nowhere in the world can you get away from it. The Hollywood / Entertainment industry is everywhere!

The bottom line? Hollywood is trying to preserve an image of falseness and insecurity hidden behind pride. Too many people unknowingly believe what they see in the entertainment industry and are overwhelmed by the glorious results that they don’t stop to think!

I brought down the sky for you and all you did was shrug.

horizon

Ever feel like what you do isn’t ever good enough? As if you did what felt like the impossible, bringing down the sky and the person’s reaction would be a simple, yet powerful shrug.

I felt like this a couple of days ago… I tried my best, but it apparently was not good enough. I felt like quitting and giving up, but I didn’t.  Well, I did, but I thought about how retarded that was and decided to just tell myself that nothing I could have done could have changed anything.

My advice is to come to the realization that your best is nothing more or nothing less of your abilities for whatever task you were assigned to do.  Move on and wait until the next day, when the sun sets and rises with a fresh start.

Rise Against Concert!

// May 14th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // writing

I am counting down the days until the next concert. School will be out and my friends and I will be going on a mini roadtrip 4 hours down south to a town so small, our school can almost triple the population. Well, here is one of my essays I wrote in school and it was about the last concert I went to:

imgres This picture is not like any ordinary picture in my big, beefy photo album. My feet are dangling in midair supported by my fellow rockers going nuts to the crazy rhythms. My heartbeat is beating no less than one hundred times faster than the energizer bunny. I felt like I was standing on the rooftop ready to fall; my mind was racing and all I could feel was the fist-pumping music. I crowd surfed my way towards the front of the Rise Against stage. The stage looked like it was about to cry with all the stress that was put on it. Finally after what felt like a marathon of non-stop rock, the moment came for a more down-to-earth song. This was the time when our bodies could cool down, but only for a few minutes. It was like the pit stop of an Indy 500 race. “Alright Chicago, time to give our security a little break,” that was all that he needed to do to lower the pandemonium to a stable environment. It’s when crowd surfing, fist pumping, screaming until your eyes popped, and most of all the mosh pits all seized. Swuushk Swuushk. All around me lighters were elevated into the air. With so many lighters in the air, the hall illuminated like The Great Hall in a Harry Potter movie. Everyone had a daring death grip on their lighters as the swayed them left to right. The beat of the song mimicked the motion of the lighters almost perfectly. All good things come to an end and so did this emotional roller coaster. I was in awe how everyone around me shared this invisible, invincible bond after Tim sang that song.

Thud, Thud, Thud, Thud, Th, Thu, Thuuud. The drums went off like an unexpected alarm clock. The vibe in the concert pit did a 180° and I started jumping and getting back into the flow of the music. I saw a mosh pit close by and joined in. I then got sucked in the center and I felt like a human punching bag, luckily my friend swooped me out of there just in time. I was still far too new to the whole concert craze.
