I like to post about inspiration, social networking sites and media and the internet, and other random stuff. I like to get my fingers dirty in creative writing. Critng....you know, like a spork.
Ok Go Is a band known for their creative music videos such as the treadmill video. Here is another great video. I just wonder how long this one took… I’m not a big fan of their music, but their videos are just amazing! Check it out
What I really like about Rise Against is how their songs relate to so many situations in life. The title Audience of One, comes from the idea that the President controls the country…how the citizens are the audience of “one” person and of one body of government. I think this refers to when George Bush was the president…how everything seemed to be go fine, then shit started to go downhill….will Obama be the same?
“Identities assume us
As nine and five add up,
Synchronizing watches
To the seconds that we lost”
This is saying how life is now a job and its sucks that we cant go back to the things we used to do before we had responsibility. The innocence and freedom is gone and now the person in this song is lonely and wishing things were different.
This also relates to life when guys get girlfriends and blow off their friends. Then when the girlfriend leaves your life you realized how much you missed out with your friends…to the seconds you lost with your friends and other opportunities you missed out on, not only because you worked too much, but also because you spent too much time with your girlfriend.
“We cruised along at half speed
But then we shifted gears”
You and your girlfriend / boyfriend are together and everything goes well, then all of a sudden it all goes downhill. I think this has happened to almost everyone. Those who know when you drive downhill or uphill, you need to change gears because the car works harder.
“But you ran away
Now all my friends are gone”
Ever had a friend who pretty much only spent time with their girlfriend or boyfriend? We all do. And then all of a sudden they breakup and they suddenly they want to be your friend again? At first you may remove them from your social circle, but you will soon realize they made a mistake and become friends with them again… Think about this next time you date, don’t forget your friends because they will always be there!
“I brought down the sky for you but all you did was shrug
You gave my emptiness a name”
I like this lyric because it can relate both to everyday life and to military life.
How often do you feel like you tried your hardest and nobody noticed? How often was somebody else’s reaction to something you’ve done not what you hoped for. How did you feel? Sad? Depressed?
In the military world, this is what a typical soldier may feel. Of course the military leaders expect you to “eliminate the enemy”, but a soldier may have killed someone and was expecting praise maybe afterwards but all he felt was emptiness, depression, and regret.
“We’re all ok, until the day we’re not The surface shines, while the inside rots We raced the sunset and we almost won We slammed the brakes, but the wheels went on”
This is about as true as it gets. On the outside we act just fine, but on the inside we are terrified of growing up and thinking we will be a failure.
We raced the sunset and we almost won means that life is going by too quickly and the sunset happens before we can accomplish our goals in life.
We slammed the brakes, but the wheels went on: is an amazing metaphor simply meaning : you can try to put ‘growing up’ on hold but growing up is something that you can’t stop or even slow down.
Most of you know I’m a big fan of Rise Against. The lead singer (Tim) comes to my work every so often because I work at a fitness center and he’s the most down-to-Earth guy you could possibly meet. I wanted to analyze some more of his songs. They are so fucking good. Many of their songs have multiple meanings behind them and I will try to analyze two different scenarios from this song. One is about a relationship, the other has a deeper meaning and is more general towards life.
This song is just about owning life. The song is about living and not really worrying about anything but loving life and living it.
“We live on front porches and swing life away, we get by just fine here on minimum wage”
I think we live on front porches reiterates the fact that its summertime and they’re just taking life as it comes. They are teenage couple so they’re making supporting themselves on minimum wage but they’re okay. Even though they’re young, they are in love and he will do anything for her and wont go anywhere in life without her. He later mentions he wants to “settle down where palm trees grow”…who doesn’t think about living and working where the climate is always hot? In Chicago the winters get pretty cold, everyone around here thinks about moving where its warm year round at least once.
Tim is also talking about the countless of people in todays society who live paycheck to paycheck and still get by fine. They are used to there lifestyle and are happy to way they are. Sometimes the less you have, the better you feel. You feel less stressful, sometimes living a very simple life isn’t that bad after all. Sometimes we need to accept what we have and be happy with what we got instead of stressing and worrying about the things we don’t have. Life is all about making the best of what you got.
Lets compare scars, ill tell you whose is worse
This is like “open up with me and i’ll open up to you” sort of scenario. Every relationship goes through this stage. He’s saying lets share each others pasts. They’re both painful but they’ll grow and learn more about each other from it. It’s a way of connecting deeper with another person and being closer to them on a whole new level…
This is what people naturally do. People like to compare experiences/memories/toys/things to others to see where they fit in society and how they separated and connected with others. Sometimes when you think you had it bad, there is always someone who had it worse…
lets unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words
This part of the song refers to the status of their relationship. The “love story” has been written so many times before, they want to make it their own.
I may be wrong, but I feel Tim is trying to say to live your life whatever way you want. Don’t have someone tell you what to do. It reminds me of the bible. That books acts as a “guide” to many people, but if you truly want to live your life the way you want to, then “replace it with your own words”. Each day you live you add more chapters to your “life story.” It’s up to you what goes in it and what gets written…
I’ve got some friends some that I hardly know
we’ve had some times i wouldn’t trade for the world
This is probably the most important meaning of the song. It almost reminds me partying. You meet new people and make friends but you don’t really know them. And relating to the relationship, they have been on adventure where they spent their summer days having long talks which include their future together. Most couples do this too.
Most importantly, Tims says you don´t need money to be happy – friends are much more important. Swing Life Away!
